Angers, France

Wednesday March 25, 2015; 8:40 AM

At the moment, as I draft this very post, I am sitting (rather impatiently, I might add) on a highly uncomfortable bench at the Charles de Gaulle airport (or aéroport!) train station. My mother and I are awaiting our train to Angers, France, which will not depart for quite some time… about an hour, to be precise. While waiting, prior to deciding to record my experiences here, I…

  • Pinned. Of course.
  • Spent nearly ten minutes wandering about the vicinity, trying to find a vending machine. That I could actually work.
  • Drank an entire bottle of water… I was very dehydrated.
  • Pinned more. (Again) Of course.

The two flights were an absolute blur… I remember very little, though I do recall watching three episodes of How I Met Your Mother, reading a bit of a novel, and listening to lots of music while attempting, unsuccessfully, to doze off. And now, the waiting continues… – Abby

I wrote the above journal entry several months ago, shortly before boarding a train to Angers with my mother. Not long before our departure to Paris we decided to spend a couple of days in a different French town, as we had a bit of time to spare. Angers was quite close, and has a castle(!!!)… Is it really necessary that I complete this sentence?

Ah, anyways, if you happen to be in Paris for a week or more, I highly recommend a brief visit to this quaint little town. The train ride is about an hour and a half, and the route is so, so scenic.

Oh! It should also be noted that not many people in Angers speak English, with the obvious exceptions of hotel staff and those who work at the city’s tourist attractions. If you know the basics of French, however, you’ll be fine. Bonjour!

Now, as for what to do while here… I’ve compiled an itty bitty list for you all.

What to See/Do in Angers, France

  • Castle of Angers was my favorite spot in the city. It is utterly stunning. There were a number of visitors (and French elementary schools) touring while my mother and I explored the grounds, and countless languages were being spoken – it was incredible.
  • Angers Cathedral is gorgeous. Cathedrals typically are, no?
  • See Le Maine (The River)
  • Muséum d’histoire Naturelle d’Angers
  • Terra Botanica is an amusement & botanical park. (I myself did not go here, as amusement parks aren’t really my thing, but you may enjoy this.)
  • There’s a lovely office of tourism, as well.

The weather was fairly grey and gloomy – it rained often, but my mother and I had a wonderful time in spite of this.

Angers is an absolute must-see destination in France – it may not be Paris or Nice, but its character and atmosphere are oh-so-sweet.

xoxo,

Abby

  6. My mom keeps asking me if I want to go to France, and I really, really do, but I’ve had some friends tell me that it’s no fun at all if you don’t know French. Well, of course there’ll be some fun, but not as much as you could have! I’m currently 14% fluent in French, thanks to Duolingo.com hahah. Anyways, an amusement AND botanical park?? That sounds like just my kind of place! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s
