about

“Paulo Coelho’s enchanting novel has inspired a devoted following around the world. This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and inspiring wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles along the way. But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasure found within. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts.”

my thoughts

I discovered this absolutely incredible read thanks to the lovely Carrie Anne James, my friend and talented French language instructor who selected it for her French is Beautiful book club (you can join here on Facebook!) several months ago. Despite being familiar with the title of the book, I hadn’t a clue as to what it was precisely about… and what a wonderful surprise it was to discover that this slim ‘lil pocket read is a philosophical, profound gem. The story, which follows a young shepherd, is remarkably thought-provoking and beautifully written… I found myself underlining quote after quote, enamored by the sense of each carefully chosen word.

What else can I say, other than that you must, must give The Alchemist a read. I stayed up practically an entire night devouring it in June, and was so disappointed when I reached the end. You will adore it.
