venice in august

…is so, so, so, so pretty. Pretty may be a rather lackluster adjective, but truly. Venice is just freaking beautiful. Stunning, magnifient gorgeous, insert-your-cliché-adjective-here, blah-blah-blah. I adored and cherished every (literally) colorful moment.

This ‘lil solo-trip to Italy was fairly spontaneous… I booked the tickets on a whim in June (my dad loves it when I make rash decisions like this and charge his credit card without first consulting him! My mom gave me the go ahead, though, to be fair. 😉 ), and the following month, whilst in Angers, booked a tour of the surrounding islands for August 15 and a walking tour of Florence for the following day (I had already reserved my train tickets and hotel in Florence the previous month, while making plans for Venice). Essentially, during the five days I spent in Italy this past week, only two were devoted to sightseeing. Monday I arrived in Venice quite late in the afternoon and explored a bit with my camera and no particular destination in mind. Tuesday was my absolute favorite, and just so happens to be when I took the vast majority of the above photos… ’twas also when I visited Murano, Burano, and Torcello… more on these islands to come in separate posts! I returned to Venice Thursday afternoon and wandered a bit more before heading to an airport hotel for the evening, but only snapped a handful of images on a disposable camera as I was lugging my backpack with me and preferred to not have the additional weight of a DSLR around my neck.

I’ll eventually write and publish a post on traveling alone, as it’s an activity I’ve come to love over the course of this past year. It might even be my very favorite thing… there’s nothing more liberating or confidence-boosting than the freedom to do as you please and to take care of yourself in an unfamiliar environment. My parents were of course uneasy in regards to my safety on this trip, which is comprehensible but I don’t believe their concerns were warranted (easy for me to say as a teenager, I know). More on this subject another time…

For now, I leave you with the pictures above! I’m rather satisfied with how they turned out and am already itching to go back… Venice is a destination I fell head-over-heels for, and it’s one I absolutely intend to return to again and again.

Sending lots of love to you,

Abby

Abby

  1. This takes me back to my trip to Venice! I get a bit nervous traveling to places where English isn’t the primary language, so I always have to do a lot of mental prep for that! Although, Venice is all tourists, so you can always find someone there to speak English! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

    • Hahah today when I was reading your Paris and London posts I remembered that you’d been to Venice and re-read your post on it! Why is it that I always read up on destinations *after* I’ve been to the place?? I guess I’m just never ready to come home, but then I end up seeing things I missed and just end up having even worse ‘post vacation depression’. // And right?? I felt so overwhelmed in Italy, even though everyone speaks English, but it was an excellent perspective for me to have… now I understand more why people will speak back to me in English when they hear my accent when I speak French. I don’t understand a word of Italian, which frustrated me because it’s so beautiful, but it also made me realize how far my French has come. It’s wonderful that we all have English to communicate with each other, but at the same time it’s kind of sad how native English speakers just assume everyone will understand them. Well, not sad, but presumptuous. Anyways… thanks again! xo

  4. Venice looks like a dream and even a beautiful place to enjoy when you’re alone! I could imagine walking along the streets and sitting by the water, just thinking about life!
