so, it’s been a couple of years…

Lace & Lilacs

so, here we are.

Over two years have passed since I moved to Paris in August 2015.

I initially had no intention whatsoever to write a post commemorating the two year mark, as it isn’t an especially significant period of time, but lost in thought whilst editing photographs of a friend I made here, I realized how drastically different my life currently is in comparison to where I was at the age of 17, having freshly arrived in France with no real comprehension of the innumerable challenges I would face over the course of the months to follow. Each year I spend here is a season unique unto itself, but the one I’m preparing to embark on at the moment is especially defining, as I’m transferring from a school, a community, where I felt welcome and safe to another, an unknown. Given this definitive change, I thought it would be worth taking the time to reflect upon these past twenty-four months, in order to conserve memories, to analyze my decisions, strengths, and weaknesses, and to concretely express my hopes, dreams, and fears related to the future.

i’m still not sure why i moved here

If I had a dollar for each and every time I’ve been asked,”So, why France?” I would be a freaking… well, not a billionaire or anything, but I’d probably have a solid additional 50 euros or so in my bank account.

You want the truth?

I have no idea. Something about this country appealed to my subconscious… to be 110% honest, I’ve yet to nail down what it is exactly that attracts me to French lifestyle and culture. My response to the aforementioned question generally consists of a nervous giggle and a ‘well, why not?’ followed by ‘it’s really pretty here, and um, I like the language’. Those of you who have followed me since before my move are aware as to how quickly events unfolded in 2015… one moment it was January and I was preparing to enroll in junior college, having prematurely exited high school, the next, I decided on a whim that it ‘would be cool to learn a little bit of French’ and before I knew it, I’d stumbled upon an international art school online and thought, ‘what the hell, might as well apply who knows?’. Two years later. Here I am.

two years at pca

A year and a half after enrolling at Paris College of Art as a photo undergrad I decided to part ways with the school and officially withdrew following the completion of my sophomore year. My experience at this college was, for the most part, constructive, and whilst attending courses there I made lasting friendships which I’m certain I’ll cherish for years and years to come. The fine-art focused, oftentimes superficial environment wasn’t for me, however, and as time passed improving my French became substantially more important to me than creating photographic artwork that pleased my professors… but more often than not, not myself. So. I decided that I would prefer to study photography at a French school, ideally one with a greater balance between the commercial and artistic aspects of the field. This was in February 2017. So, I did a fair bit of research. I found a school. I applied. I swore to both myself and the admissions office of said school that I would/could reach the required level of French before Fall classes begun.

Fudge, am I nervous or am I nervous.

Why do I ceaselessly push myself into awkward, uncomfortable situations (which force me to grow in leaps and bounds- welp, that’s the response? But what’s even the point of ‘growing’, is that even really a thing?).

Anyways. I dream of continuing to live and work in Paris after completing my studies (two years to go), and by this time would like to be well acquainted with the photography industry in France, the French language, the French educational system, and French culture. Attending classes with native Frenchies should help immensely, but I’m quite, quiiite anxious, to say the least. I detest attracting the curiosity and attention of others due to my origins: I am evidently not French… from how I choose to dress to the accent I have whilst speaking, it’s obvious. Which is fine. Except for when I stand out like a sore thumb as a result.

things i had never ever done (or in some cases, even imagined doing) two years ago

  • attended school in French
  • read a book in French
  • read multiple books in French
  • watched tv shows/movies without English subtitles in French
  • given a stranger directions in French
  • lost of things related to French so I’ll stop there
  • traveled in a foreign country alone
  • traveled multiple times, in multiple foreign countries alone
  • worn Stan Smith sneakers (I succumbed to the trend, but you know what? They’re super-duper comfy.)
  • lived in Montmartre
  • lived up five flights of stairs
  • lived alone up five flights of stairs
  • lived in the same neighborhood as the Eiffel Tower
  • made lifelong friends in Paris
  • gotten a real-deal tattoo
  • owned a Canon 5D Mark III (my dream camera)
  • had the Paris metro memorized by heart
  • made a pull-out bed every. single. day.
  • tracked each and every one of my purchases/expenses with an app on my phone
  • not visited my California home for nearly ten months (currently my longest streak… and at the moment it’s set to last for over a year)
  • pick-nicked on the banks of the Seine
  • photographed an event
  • au-paired
  • voted! (that didn’t go as planned.)

… that’s all that comes to mind at the moment, but I’m sure there are many more.

final thoughts

I suppose there will be good days and bad days. I suppose I’ll have to re-learn to speak up for myself (it took me long enough in English, oof). I suppose I’m going to feel a bit uncomfortable and out of place for a ‘lil while. Nothing I haven’t experienced in the past. Nothing I can’t handle or am unprepared to face.

Some days I’m proud of and pleased with myself. Other days… not so much. Sometimes I feel confident and satisfied with my decisions; sometimes I want just want to cry and cry. I swear, there are sensitive people and then… there’s Abby, on a sensitivity level all of her own.

Anyways.

Thanks for reading. The 2017-2018 academic year, c’est parti ! We’ll see how this goes.

Lots of love,

Abby

Bises xx

Abby

  1. Sometimes you can’t explain why you’re inexplicably drawn to a certain place; maybe that just goes to show how deep you feel for a certain place. You’ve accomplished so much and grown so much in two years, and you have so many more years ahead of you to go! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

  2. I cannot believe it’s already been 2 years! It’s been so awesome seeing your adventures
