PROJECT: Coraline Book Cover & Author Photo

Lace & Lilacs

a front & back book cover project!

Following two weeks of radio silence I’m returning (just in time for Halloween!) to share the project I worked on over the course of October for the studio class I attend Mondays and Fridays at school. The brief was, essentially, to realize the front and back cover of the novel of our choice, which entailed creating an author portrait in addition to the book’s illustrative cover itself. We were also required to add type/logos/etc. to the images but are not being graded on the design aspect (thank goodness), given that we’re photographers.

The full list of elements to turn in:

  • 1 cover in portrait format, dimensions 130×245 mm, 300 dpi resolution
  • 1 author portrait in format 4×3, 300 dpi resolution
  • Moodboards/explicative text
  • Lighting diagrams
  • 1 book cover with title, name of author, publishing company
  • 1 book back cover with author photo and biography

Before we begin chatting ‘process’, here are my final front and back covers:

author photo

The first step of the entirety of this project, after having selected Coraline as the book on which I’d be working, of course, was to find models! Models available exclusively on either Monday or Friday mornings between 9 and 12h30… which proved to not be the easiest of feats. Based on the availability of my Parisian friends, I ultimately decided to portray Neil Gaiman as female, due to the fact that none of my male friends or friends of friends could make it to the studio, which is located just outside of Paris, on Monday/Friday mornings because school, work, life, etc. After all, we’re being graded on the quality of the images and nothing more, yes? Anyways.

Clau is free Friday mornings, and she quickly agreed to pose for me towards the beginning of October. Before the shoot, I assembled two moodboards with inspiration for this image: on the left, the ‘Wednesday Addams’ sort of look I was aiming to capture, as well examples of the specific studio lighting I hoped to recreate. On the right, a polaroid of Clau taken earlier this month in which she’s wearing the perfect shade of red lipstick for the photo, and outfit ideas.

post-shoot…

And so we shot! On the left, the image as shot. On the right, my first edit. And below… the final picture!

the back cover

Though I prefer the image as pictured above, a 4×3 crop was required for the final photo, which is (um, obviously) visible here on the left. Just below is my final back cover, at its proper dimensions with an author bio, publishing company logo, and barcode.

the cover

From the moment I selected Coraline as the book on which I’d be working, I knew I wanted the infamous black buttons to be a key component of the visual I’d create. My lovely friend Olivia (whom I’ve shot numerous times) was happy to model for me, and couldn’t have been a more perfect Coraline… with a bit of help from the black wig I purchased on Amazon, of course. My initial moodboard included hints of pink (below on the left), but after finalizing the portrait of Clau I realized that if a pop of red was to be present in both images it would serve as a strong link between the two. I therefore added more red elements to my inspiration boards, as you can see very well below on the right. For the shoot I purchased a couple of black buttons, red thread, red ribbon, a pair of silver sewing scissors, and a handful of sewing needles. Only one button and the red ribbon were included in the final image.

polaroids, etc…

Prior to shooting digital images for the final cover, I practiced posing Oli, taking snapshots with my polaroid as well as with a disposable film camera + flash. I included the polaroids in one of my three moodboards, and found that this method of working can be quite successful and efficient in order to better visualize ideas for projects like this one.

the cover photo

Following the digital shoot, I selected the photo below as the ideal image for the book cover. In all, I was satisfied with about 15 of the pictures (all of which I’ve yet to edit, but may very well share in the future), but this one in particular functioned best, given the overall concept. On the left is the picture as shot, on the right, edited, below the two it’s cropped to the dimensions my professer specified (+ title and author)

la note d’intention/the note of intention

note

In order to realize my two images, a cover for the book Coraline as well as an author photo for its back cover, I decided to begin my visual research with the motif of buttons which reoccurs often over the course of this horror novel. I wanted to create a rather strange image capable of inspiring a feeling of profound curiosity and fear within its audience. When I began working I didn’t have a specific color palette in mind, but after shooting the author photo I realized that a vibrant red would be the best possible hue in order to establish an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear. I therefore created a link between the image of Coraline and her button eye and the author photo by using an identical shade of red in the two photographs.

I shot each image with only one light, a choice made to accentuate the shadows which appear on the models’ faces. As for the models, I selected two young girl, because the protagonist of the book is a young girl, of course, but above all in order to represent a certain innocence which is always present in spite of the book’s dark, frightening nature.

(I translated this directly from the French and it therefore reads a bit choppily but ain’t nobody got time to rewrite this well. Nobody being me.)

‘Tis all, friends! I hope you enjoyed this post; do let me know your thoughts!

xoxo,

Abby

    • Thanks so much, Audrey! I’ve never shared a project outline like this before, but I think I’ll be doing it again in the future. 🙂 (Also, yesss Coraline is the best!)

  2. such a clever project and amazing portraits! Coraline still haunts my dreams lol but I love how you incorporated it!

    • Hahah, I had nightmares for ages after seeing it for the first time (and in a movie theatre, no less!). I thought the story’s visuals would be perfect for a project like this. 🙂
